President Akufo-Addo has given new IBF Lightweight champion Richard Commey Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis(50,000) and a car.
Commey knocked out his Russian opponent Isa Chaniev, in round 2 to claim the IBF title last month. His victory sets up a mandatory title challenge with WBA and WBO titleholder Vasiliy Lomachenko (12-1, 9 KOs) in a unification bout on April 12.
He became the 9th Ghanaian to win a title at the world stage. The others are David Kotey Poison, Azumah Nelson, Nana Yaw Konadu, Ike Quartey, Alfred Kotey, Joshua Clottey, Joseph Agbeko, Isaac Dogboe.
Today he paid a courtesy call to the Presidency where President Akufo-Addo gifted him a sum of GHC50,000 and a car.
The President said: “They [the Sports Ministry] are going to buy you a car, they are in the process of arranging it from the Ministry.
“They will get you a nice Toyota car. The office of the President is also adding Gh50,000 to it. It is a small token of our esteem and admiration for the honour you have brought our nation. Keep it up,”
Commey also thanked the President but asked him to pay attention to the sport.
“Some boxing managers and coaches enter into agreements without the consent of the boxer. This phenomenon does not help boxers. The government, the Sports Ministry and the Ghana Boxing Authority must look at that aspect and deal with it. If dealt with, the country will have more world champions,” Commey said.
