The Manchester City player Bernardo Silva invited accusations of racial stereotyping after posting an image of Mendy as a child next to a picture of a mascot for a Spanish chocolate peanut brand. The mascot is black and has large, red lips.
Bernardo’s tweet which was accompanied by the words “Guess Who?” – drew condemnation from the anti-racism charity Kick It Out.
Bernardo Silva has been charged with misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a social media post on 22 September 2019.
The FA charge is detailed as insulting, improper and bringing the game into disrepute .It has also been described as an “aggravated breach” meaning it is in the higher bracket of offence, because it refers to race or colour.
Guardiola (coach of Manchester city) said in defence of Silva last week that ,Silva’s intention was just a joke.
The FA are looking into a separate video uploaded by Silva last year on Instagram, asking his team mate, Mendy, who was dressed all in black, why he was naked.
But it is not clear whether that video forms part of the evidence to support Silva’s FA charge. The midfielder has until 9 October 2019 to provide a response.
