3 key things captured in Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation’s Address 2018

President Nana Akufo-Addo will today, [Wednesday], February 8, visit Parliament to deliver the 2018 State of the Nation Address (SONA) As mandated by Article 67 of the 1992 constitution President will account to the nation, through Parliament, his stewardship in the last year. In what is his second SONA, Nanansem.com gathers, President Akufo-Addo’s address will be heavily based on three key themes. These key areas are the economy, jobs and social interventions.

1. Economy: On the economy, Nanansem.com understands, President Akufo-Addo will touch on the policies his government initiated and how it affected the ordinary Ghanaian. After painting a bleak picture of Ghana’s economy in his 2017 address, he is expected to tout his policies that has seen Ghana’s growth rate move up from the 3.6% left by his predecessor in 2017 to the 6.3% his government achieved in 2017. The 3.6% growth rate in 2016 was the lowest ever recorded in the last 20 years. He had stated in his 2017 address that all his policies were going hinder on stronger economy.

2. Jobs:  Unemployment continues to be a problem in Ghana ans President Akufo-Addo’s address is expected to put out figures on jobs created in 2017. Though government has often maintained that it had created jobs within its one year in office, the President, while addressing journalists last month, failed to give details. While answering a question on the number of jobs his government had created within the last year, he stated that the figures were still being put together and would be ready in the next three months which did not sound too convincing to many. The skepticism on job creation was worsened by the Minister of Agric, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto’s claim at the same forum that his ministry’s ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ programme had created over 745,000 jobs. The President is therefore expected to bring some clarity on the jobs created so far by presenting some figures and touch on the ‘One-Disttrict-One-Factory’ project which he had promised in 2017 as one of his ways of creating jobs.

3. Social interventions : During his address in 2017, President Akufo-Addo had promised to fulfill key promises he made during the 2016 campaign like the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, restoration of teachers and nurses trainee allowances and the review of some taxes and levies, among others. In today’s address, he is expected to also tout his achievements as he has been able to fulfill many of the promises. Talk of the Free SHS policy, the teachers and nurses trainee allowances, the removal of what they describe as nuisance taxes. In all, President Akufo-Addo’s address will sum up how his government has been able to stabilise the economy, brought some reliefs to Ghanaians through social interventions and was going better their lives with the creation of jobs. Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo’s address is not expected to dwell too heavily on these four contentious topics.
