Ghana Premier League clubs frustrated over football delay

The prolonged delay to the start of the Ghana Premier League has left clubs utterly frustrated and disjointed.

Relegated Great Olympics secured a court injunction on Monday to put the start of the 2017/18 season billed to kick start this weekend on hold.

The situation has infuriated several clubs after putting their plans and programmes in dissaray amid the huge financial implication.

It appears League champions Aduana Stars and FA Cup winners Asante Kotoko are the hardest hit as they prepare for their African campaign which start this weekend.

It’s unclear when the league will kick start after the Executive Committee failed to reveal the roadmap regarding the latest setback.

Clubs have been left in the dark after the Ghana FA postponed indefinitely the 24th Ordinary session of Congress which was scheduled to be held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Thursday.

Communication Director of Hearts of Oak Kwame Opare Addo says the delay is unfortunate.

“I don’t think anyone can fault Great Olympics for heading to court. It’s their right but it’s unfortunate we find ourselves in this situation.

“The club, players, fans will be affected by the latest decision.

Medeama communication chief Patrick Akoto further posited: “That is the prize you pay in any democratic jurisprudence. We live by rules and laws and if one party feels aggrieved, it’s their right to go to court.

“However, I would have thought that clubs try as much as possible to exhaust internal structures before jumping to the law court. We can’t be heading to court at the least opportune time. It does not augur well for us.

Aduana Stars Chief Executive, Albert Commey: ” This is where he find ourselves. We have to wait for the lawyers to argue their cases out and we’ll see how it goes.

Jerome Okyere is a communication member of Dreams FC: “The last four years have been pathetic. Go back and check and you will see how clubs have used the court to frustrate the process.

“We can’t continue like this. How do you convince any potential sponsor to attach itself to a league whose date is always uncertain.”
