The Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra exploded with much excitement late last Saturday as hockey fans joined new champions of the Sapholda Hockey League, Exchequers of Bank of Ghana (male) and Royal Ladies of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA, women) to celebrate their feat of the just -ended season.
Exchequers went undefeated in the 10 matches, winning their final game 7-0 against Ark Men on Saturday, September 15 to top the league with 24 points.
They thus snatched the title from the GRA men who finished second with 23 points.
Defending ladies champions, Royal Ladies of GRA also kept a 100 per cent record as they won all the six matches played to top the ladies division with a total of 18 points.
Sapholda also won the Masters version of the league with 21 points from eight matches played, while Real Ambassadors Boys showed their class in the Youth division to finish as champions on 24 points.
Exchequers who had always played second fiddle to GRA and Police Men for a decade, showed much brilliance when the league got underway and never looked back as they recorded a goal haul of 34 in the 10 matches played.
With GRA Men breathing fire on Exchequers in their last and deciding match, Exchequers ensured that Ark Men did not stand their way to glory.
Goals from Ebenezer Arthur, Apronti Akuafo, Benjamin Kwofie, Elikem Akaba, Nicholas Nyarko and Samuel Agbeli handed them a deserving victory and bragging rights in the league.
In the female division, Royal Ladies of GRA maintained their winning form with Vivian Nakuor’s solitary strike that earned them victory against Reformers Ladies.
In the other male matches in the men’s division, Police Men won 8-1 against Legonites, GRA Men also proved too strong in their match against Reformers men by whipping their 7-0.
A hat-trick by Nicholas Hanson in the 33rd, 45th and 49th minutes and a brace by Nsilbini Salya in the 13th and 18th minutes, as well as goals from Kwasi Anim-Ansah and Stephen Ofosu Asamoah in the 49th and 57th minutes respectively won the day for the dethroned champions.
In the Ladies division, Police Ladies defeated Ark Ladies 6-0, with Extinguishers Ladies pipping Real Ambassadors Ladies with 2-1 victory.
In the Master’s division, Sapholda lost 1-2 to Golden Sticks of Ghana Commercial Bank, with Citizens overwhelming Multistix with 7-0
Ark Boys also defeated Young Financiers 4-1 in the Youth division with Real Ambassadors Boys running away with a 6-0 victory over Kasoa Heroes to become the champions at the youth division.
